Finally a proper tonkotsu, everything else mid

3/5 overall. A strong/bad onion smell on the first nose; the broth is good and it's the only place I've had a nice creamy tonkotsu, but everything else is very mid. The vibe is scrappy cafeteria, but the prices are not.

Kuukai tonkotsu + egg
3.03.0 out of 5

Broth: finally proper tonkotsu, could be richer (4/5). Noodle: instant-tasting, slightly overcooked, but plenty (2/5). Char siu: thin, still stringy, little flavor (3/5). Egg: over-salted, no fragrance (3/5). Onions: scallions too fine and old-smelling, red onion just adds bad breath (2/5). Pickled ginger disappears in the soup. Bamboo shoot pleasantly pickled (3/5).

Roasted barley tea (refillable)

Tasted exactly as it should, refreshing, and nice not to worry about size with refills. Do get this.

Ambience

Scrappy/hipstery: little plastic cups, worn countertop, jpop/jrock blasting, kitchen in the seating area so the smell of frying gyoza is everywhere. Soup served in a disposable plastic container; food on a little plastic tray — adds to the cafeteria vibe. Very cramped. Service friendly but overwhelmed, with no serving system so dishes went to the wrong people several times.
